Confucianism
Confucianism is essentially a philosophical and ethical belief system based on the Chinese philosopher, Confucius. This secular belief system was originated in China during 500 B.C.E. Confucius, born around 551 B.C.E., was said to have a benign personality and was most influential during the Spring and Autumn period. His father died around 548 B.C.E, and he lived with his mother in poverty. Confucius realized the conspicuous unrest in China during the Warring States period. He thought dynasties lacked discipline and respect. Confucius then rose to the occasion; he influenced many people and convinced them that China needed a new ideology that had the potential to bring more peace and less instability. After the death of Confucius, Confucian scholars wrote books to continue the teachings of Confucius.
The core of Confucianism is a belief that people can be improved through looking upon oneself. The three fundamentals of Confucianism are: Ren, Li, and Xiao. Ren is a sense of humanity, Li is a sense of propriety, and Xiao is filial piety. Some other important virtues are: Yi (righteousness), Zhi (knowledge), and Xin (integrity). Ren was one of the most crucial virtues of Confucianism. If these virtues were abided, then one could approach Junzi which means, “Superior individual”. Ren meant that people had to have a sense of altruism. Moreover, it stated that one should benevolently affect the society. Li defined the mandatory functions of daily life. These functions included having a good education and being involved in society. Xiao was a critical component of Confucianism. Xiao meant filial piety. Filial piety is the respect of the elderly. The five relationships that incorporated filial piety were: father to son, ruler to ruled, husband to wife, brother to elder brother, and friend to friend. Children were obligated to never complain to their parents and invariably show respect. Confucian believers also had to have a sense of integrity. This meant that they could differentiate between right and wrong. Ultimately, if people were to follow these merits, then that could bring political and social order.
Confucianism has had a prodigious influence on Earth. Confucianism creates the foundation to a developed society. If people are not to follow the qualities of Confucianism, then a society cannot be completely developed. For example, there has been so much turmoil in the Middle East. It is simply because the citizens their overlook merits such as Ren. Confucianism has also had an immense effect on China today. Citizens of China have a lot of respect for people older than them and the rulers. The people of China work diligently to succeed. Confucianism, today, is also practiced in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. In America, today, there are clubs and organizations in schools so students could help the ones that need it. Students are taught to work hard. This belief system has been one of the most significant of all time.
